The Berkeley Student Food Collective has started its 5th attempt to lease the former Bear’s Lair Tavern space on Lower Sproul to operate our student-run, nonprofit grocery co-op to serve the UC Berkeley and Southside community.
The Collective would bring its 15 years of Southside grocery experience to create a financially sustainable, community-oriented retail anchor to Lower Sproul. The Student Union Board of Directors has rejected our proposal in favor of 5 consecutive restaurant concepts — none of which lasted even 18 months.
